Youth-Magnet Cities
09.30.2009
Sue Shellenbarger’s article, The Next Hot Youth-Magnet Cities, published in The Wall Street Journal is getting a lot of attention today from city and regional analysts in the blogosphere. I hope these experts are right. Of the cities mentioned in the article, only Austin saw job growth for workers age 22-34 between 2007Q4 and 2008Q4. Portland, Seattle, and New York collectively lost 10,600 jobs held by workers in that age group (no data available for Washington DC). You’d need to look at wages and hiring trends by industry to get a firm handle on this, but on the surface 2008 was not too encouraging. (Source: QWI).
