This one is always fun.
The wealthiest people in America, according to the Forbes Real Time Billionaire database (as of 10/01/2021), and how they stack up to metropolitan area economies in the country:
- Elon Musk $199.8B | Would rank as the 21st largest metro economy, and 25% larger than the entire Austin economy, where Tesla is building a reportedly $1B manufacturing facility with 5,000 jobs.
- Jeff Bezos $191.4B | Would rank right behind Musk, between Riverside ($200B GDP) and Charlotte ($178B GDP); equivalent to nearly one-half of the entire Seattle economy.
- Bill Gates $129.7B | Would rank as the 34th largest metro economy, just ahead of San Antonio.
- Mark Zuckerberg $122.7B | Would rank as the 37th largest metro economy, and equivalent to about 37% of the GDP for the entire San Jose MSA/Silicon Valley economy.
Michael Dell ($53.5B) ranks 16th on the Forbes list for the richest people in the United States. While he might be well behind Musk in terms of the wealthiest people active in the Austin metro area, Dell might take solace in knowing that he’s still worth more than twice the GDP for Williamson County, where Dell is based.
